THE SCHMOES: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

First things first – we are NOT critics. We’re just two normal guys telling you what we think of movies. Personally, I listen to friends before I listen to most critics. I’m not saying that a lot of critics don’t have good opinions, but I feel a lot of these people just shit on movies just to shit on movies. Like Inception – One guy said he almost fell asleep. How do you fall asleep in that movie? Brain exploding maybe, but falling asleep? I start to think it’s a ploy to get people to go their websites because they’re going against the grain. But who knows, maybe the guy is just an angry prick.

“It sucks because everyone else likes it Fuckos!”

Look, this guy can hate Inception until the sun goes down, I don’t give a shit. I don’t agree with him but he should be able to have that opinion. What bothers me about him and about most critics is that they write with an arrogance like they are smarter than you. It seems to me that they’re writing to tell you that you’re wrong for liking or not liking a movie. It is just an opinion, there’s no right or wrong. Movie preference is like music preference, you like what you like for your own reasons.

No one is ever going to find someone that likes every movie they do. We like movies for certain reasons and we hate them for certain reasons. Any movie that has Joshua Jackson in it, makes me raise an eyebrow…but some people love the dude.

“Who? Me?!!”

Mark and I are big movie fans, and enjoy watching them for what they are. If something is a fun popcorn movie, we’ll treat it as such. If we disagree on a film, we’ll make sure and rag on each other’s opinion (I still know that he has a soft spot for Space Chimps).

We started doing this because there are no honest reviews out there for normal people by regular people. We wanted to hear just regular people shooting the shit about movies the same way you would with your friends as you are walking out of the theater. Mark and I, like everyone else, have our own tastes. If you watch our videos, and find you have the same tastes as us, then hopefully we can save you from wasting money or encourage you to see something you may not have seen. Trust me, we never try to tell you that our opinions are the “right” ones, and that you’re an idiot if you don’t listen to us.

If you disagree with our tastes and think we’re wrong most of the time, well we hope you at least find us entertaining.

Which leads us to the most important reason we do this – discussions. It’s a lot of fun to see how much movies really mean to people. I like reading the comments with you guys and seeing why people liked certain things. It’s fun to see the things you guys may have caught that I missed. And I love when people are completely out of their minds. So have at it.

I had one guy argue with me to death that Hot Rod was a good movie. He had a lot of valid points that he made and presented himself in a fun way. And this lead me to the concIusion that I still believe that Hot Rod is a total shitbox, but it was awesome to see this dude fight to the death over it to prove that it was an underrated comedy.

“Ok maybe I should have done a Dick in the Box movie instead.”

Do I think I am too harsh when I really don’t like a movie? Yeah probably. But I don’t like to feel cheated. And I’ve been feeling cheated a lot this summer, in what I like to call “a thunderstorm of garbage”.

I rag on actors sometimes but I mean, it really isn’t their fault that they took the job, and if they’re horrendous actors, they shouldn’t have been cast in the first place. I blame casting, and the studio execs for that, but that is a whole other blog.

Mark and I have been doing this for two years now and we have become addicted. We release two to three reviews a week and we hit on trailers we dug or thought looked ridiculous, and we’re even trying our hand at movie news now, so check it out. We won’t be reporting the news as much as we will be commenting on the biggest stories. Personally I dig that a new Flash Gordon movie is coming out. I just hope this director sets the tone and doesn’t get too goofy with it. So thank you for checking out Schmoes Know! I’m going to try to update my blog at least two or three times a day and Mark will be updating his as often as he can (He is a Carfax star ya know).
