Welcome, all! It’s another Reilly Roundtable and I am darn glad, nay, DAMN glad, you stopped on by.
How’s the summer treating you so far– okay great… Anyways…
I wanted to check in about the movie season thus far. What are your favorite movies this summer; your biggest disappointments?
I wrote an article a few months back that predicted the biggest summer movie. Which you can find here: http://schmoesknow.com/?p=4529
Okie-doke, obviously I’ve been off the Mark a bit. My first name is Mark so that’s funny…
Anywho… if picking the highest grossing summer movies was a NCAA Basketball Bracket, I’d be out a thousand bucks and the deed to my condo in Barstow. Which only goes to show you how unpredictable movie-going audiences are, at least from a studio standpoint.
But I stand by my choices – I too was coming from the studio point of view. They SHOULD have made a gazillion dollars opening weekend based on the brand, the sequelness (new word!) and word of mouth.
But in the end, for an audience to really give a shit – the movies have to be good. And that’s where I shine. I know a good movie when I see one…
With CAPTAIN AMERICA, HARRY POTTER and COWBOYS AND ALIENS as my next MUST SEE’S, maybe I can come out looking a little bit more like I know what I am talking about if these movies do well critically and commercially.
They have to connect with the audience if they are to have legs; to stand tall in the face of another HUGE RELEASE coming every weekend. Sure, it’s all subjective…
Some would call this awesome. Others, very, very sad.
But when a movie truly focuses on story and not spectacle, they tend to have some staying power.
Okay, public service announcement over. Here are my top five summer movies so far, in order from one to five:
Subjective thoughts aside, as a movie lover, I enjoyed the hell out of these movies and believe they represent the best that is worth your dollar right now.
Okay, I know you people might be wondering… What are my least favorite of the summer season so far? Glad you asked:
Come on Ryan! You should have known when the script showed up on your doorstep in a flaming bag!
Ha, I found a Russian poster… It’s Russian, right?
This poster is EVERY reason why you shouldn’t see this movie.
…Or how Johnny Depp bought his third island.
Please stop. You’re killing the children.
So, here we are… Halfway through the biggest titles to come out; on the eve of TRANSFORMERS THE DARK SIDE OF MOON LANDING (right?); awaiting HARRY POTTER and old CAP’N AMERICA, and, so far, it looks as though Hollywood is doing pretty well for themselves.
So, to get you all in the mood for next year, I’ve decided to throw in some good ole’ fashioned movie news; what’s happening in the world of big-budget movies that will be demanding your attention come next year…
Here we go… First up:
The Rock has officially joined the GI JOE sequel as the character of ROADBLOCK.
Well, at least they bagged the director of JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER.
The sequel – um, prequel to 300 has now changed its name from XERXES to 300: BATTLE OF ARTEMESIA.
I guess since it has nothing to do with 300 Spartans fighting to the death and everything to do with not pissing off the Persians, this title is right on the money.
Even though GREEN LANTERN was a gigantic letdown both critically and financially, the producers are telling us they are planning a sequel.
Instead of five writers, they’re hiring ten; just to make sure that no JOSEPH CAMPBELL myth goes unturned.
The sixth Fast and Furious film will be released on May 23rd, 2013.
Don’t worry, according to the Mayans, the world will be ending on December 12th, 2012.
MGM, the once defunct, now re-upped studio is remaking WARGAMES.
The studio has made an offer to the Sony Playstation hackers to write the script.
Steven Spielberg is interviewing writers to pen JURASSIC PARK PART IV.Okay, f**k it! I want another Jurassic Park!
And lastly… This tickles my movie bone as well as my composer bone… DANNY ELFMAN will be composing THE HUNGER GAMES.
THE HUNGER GAMES is a shared obsession between myself and that Schmoe, Kristian, and the fact that Danny Elfman is scoring this movie should make him and every other fan of the Hunger Games very happy.
And if you haven’t read THE HUNGER GAMES, please do so now. The movie adaptation should be amazing with Gary Ross (PLEASANTVILLE) directing and JENNIFER LAWRENCE (WINTER’S BONE, X-MEN FIRST CLASS) as Katniss.
And any movie that is scored by the guy that did BATMAN, BEETLEJUICE, GOOD WILL HUNTING, SPIDER-MAN and THE KINGDOM is sure to have some awesome, memorable themes.
Well, that’s all the time we have left today, kiddies. Join us next week as we learn about where babies come from and whether or not John Lennon was a Republican or a Democrat when he died.
As for me…
I’ll see you in line,
Reilly
