Our Review of The Campaign:

INTRO
Mark: Vote for me, Schmoes fans…I promise safer roads, better education systems and a job for everyone in Schmoeville.
Kristian: Vote for me Schmoeville…I gave Dark Knight Rises 5/5 Schmoes.

M: Hello Schmoeville, not only are Kristian and I running against each other, so too are Will Ferrel and Zach Galifianakis in The Campaign…trying to win their district in my home state of North Carolina.
K: Well you would easily win Town Drunk, no one is running against you.
M: Stumbling for that office.
K: You’re like Red in Back to the Future.

K: Going to this I was wondering whether it’s R, PG-13? It’s definitely R. No punches held…
M: No punches pulled, a lot of laughs and a few of them will bust your gut.
K: …but don’t punch babies.

K: Here’s the thing with Zach Galifianakis…he always plays weird characters, doesn’t have a ton of range, but as opposed to Due Date or The Hangover, in this one he’s less obnoxious and more likable.
M: He’s hysterical, and he offsets the weirdness because you root for his characters most of the time, and in this he’s managed to get a wife, a few kids…and he loves his home state. By contrast, you have Will Ferrell, who pretty much is the political version of Ricky Bobby.
K: With a lot of George W. Bush thrown in there.

VIDEO CLIPS

M: Ferrell is the incumbent, he’s been in office forever and has always run unopposed, but now some meddling lobbyists behind the scenes start pulling some strings, and they try to place Galifianakis as a puppet congressman to do their bidding. Much like Kristian is a puppet reviewer: dance, puppet!
K: There’s a lot of laughs to be found in this movie, a few scenes in particular I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes…all I’ll say is get ready for the scene with Zach and his family at the dinner table.
M: Sometimes the scene has already moved on and you’re still laughing at stuff you saw a couple minutes ago.
K: But then the movie will just (claps hands) hit a screeching halt.
M: Wow that was loud…I have neighbors, man. It’s early.
K: Come on, it’s not that early.

K: Overall, this movie is very fun but it does get slow sometimes, it occasionally gets bogged down but you will laugh a lot.
M: It’s very funny, I thought when it got to the third act there was too much story, and we didn’t need all that explanation…just keep giving us these silly laughs we’ve been getting.
K: I did like that, to offest the crazy lead characters, you had some more grounded ones like Jason Sudekis.
M: He really impressed me as Will Ferrell’s campaign manager, and Dylan McDermott is funny…and weird…as a scheming bully behind the scenes. And very nice to see John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd as the two lobbyists trying to get Zach elected so they can control policy…they weren’t in it as much as I had hoped, but good to see them back.
K: They had a very Trading Places-type role in this; the two older guys pitting everyone else against each other, fun to watch.
M: Although that’s the last time you’ll hear us mention this movie in the same breath as Trading Places…that’s one of the great comedies of all-time.
K: It’s a fun poke at the political system, you get a lot of appearances by pundits who help the story move.
M: Wolf Blitzer is pretty much a dude in the movie.
K: It’s a nice touch, and the writing never gets too left or too right, it’s just a funny story centering around these two idiot politicians going after each other.
M: In North Carolina. I promise it’s a great state…you should come visit sometime.

M: Schmoeing this movie up; is it silly and sometimes stupid? Yes, of course it is, but it’s a comedy and it made me laugh enough to where I can get it to 3/5 Schmoes.
K: I’m gonna push…I enjoyed it, it made me laugh, you can to a theater and enjoy a comedy. It’s not all that memorable, but someone may say “Hey, remember that movie?” “Yeah, it was pretty good I guess…”

K: How about you Schmoeville, do you wanna see this? Do you think Will Ferrell still has it as a comedy star? Anything left in the tank?
M: Of course he does!
K: I wasn’t asking you! Vote for me Schmoeville, I’ll stick to the questions that were asked.
M: Vote for me, I’ll focus on the issues and not get distracted by blonde actresses!
