Our Review of Skyfall
KRISTIAN: MGM is back in business and so is Daniel Craig as James Bond in his latest adventure, “Skyfall”. After the triumpn of “Casino Royale” and the disappointment of “Quantum of Solace”, it is good to report that Bond is officially back! Daniel Craig is still the more rough-and-tumble, Bourne-like Bond…he still drinks and romances all night long but unlike past incarnations, he looks rough the next morning. But he’s still primed for a good fight, and he meets his match with Javier Bardem as a worthy Bond villain. But whereas most villains have been hell-bent on world domination, Bardem’s baddie is obsessed with revenge. I like this new spin on the franchise, and enjoyed the reveals we got into both Bond’s past and his history with M, played perfectly as always by Judi Dench. We get the gadgets, the nods to previous Bond films, the martinis and all…but “Skyfall” succeeds by not resting on its veritable history but by adding more depth to the celebrated franchise.

MARK: The lion at MGM finally paid his debts and is roaring once again…there’s a new Bond film in theaters, and I’m pleased to say it’s one of the best of the series! Daniel Craig reprises his role as the spy revered by men and adored by women. Javier Bardem’s villain seems to both revere AND adore Bond, problem being that he also wants to kill him in his plot to get revenge on MI6 for perceived wrongs years ago. It’s nice to see a different type of Bond story; this one gets more personal and takes us to places within James and M’s history that the franchise has never gone before. Sam Mendes is thus the perfect director to make these small moments explode on screen just as much as the formidable action sequences. The Bond girls are mere background here to the engaging story and rebirth of the fun gadgets and catchphrases we all know and love. Some may have cried “the sky is falling” after witnessing “Quantum of Solace”; fear not, dear moviegoers: “Skyfall” places the Bond franchise squarely back at the top of the action film stratosphere!
