The Schmoes blast off to outer space with “Lockout”…could the new sci-fi action flick be another triumph for Luc Besson? Or would Guy Pearce be the only light in an otherwise dark prison borefest?

In the latest review from Schmoes Know, Kristian and Mark planned to blast off to outer space together with “Lockout”…however, due to Mark’s demanding rec basketball league schedule, Kristian entered orbit alone and took in the new Luc Besson flick solo. Both big science-fiction aficionados, the Schmoes knew this film could go one of two ways: an early leap into what promises to be a fantastic summer season at the movies, or a forgettable action clone destined for the plum “2am on cable” slot. Mark leaped at the chance to interrogate Kristian about whether or not the newest kid on the sci-fi block was worth his hard-earned (?) cash.

Starring Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace, “Lockout” follows the adventures of a renegade hero making a desperate attempt to rescue the President’s daughter from an outer-space prison. The premise is nothing if not ambitious, and seems to take cues from past success in the action world…going in, it appears to borrow elements from “Die Hard”, “Escape from New York” and even another recent film starring a kidnapped Maggie Grace, “Taken”. With his involvement in films such as “The Professional” and “The Fifth Element”, Luc Besson certainly knows his way around action and outer space…could “Lockout” be an exciting futuristic primer for the summer? Or would it leave the Schmoes with a hard tumble back down to Earth? Enjoy!
