Our review of Top Gun IMAX 3D:
KRISTIAN: Pete Mitchell and company are back in theaters, and this time they’re taking “Top Gun” to the best of the best in theater experiences, 3D IMAX. The movie that solidified Tom Cruise as the star of a generation is a pure thrill ride that just about everyone has seen multiple times…so does it need to be rereleased in theaters? Well, the 3D doesn’t look great, predictable because it wasn’t filmed to be presented that way, but the IMAX screen size and especially the sound make it a treat to witness. The jet engine roars, the classic guitar anthem that is it’s signature, “Top Gun” as film stands the test of time. So if you missed it in theaters the first time, it’s probably going to be the best movie theater experience you’ll have so far this year.
SCORE: 4.5/5 Schmoes (movie)
4/5 Schmoes (IMAX/3D)
MARK: “Top Gun”, the classic tale of naval aviators travelling to Miramar, CA to train as fighter pilots while brushing up their volleyball skills, is back in theaters! I’m an unabashed and shameless fan of this film, a rare cinemtatic feat that is at once timeless and a time capsule of 1986…but it’s now 2013, and we have new toys like IMAX and 3D to show off. So how does “Top Gun” play on the super-big screen? The 3D is impressive considering it wasn’t shot for that, and the sound delivers full throttle engine roars and the legendary soundtrack sounds as crisp as ever. Is this a cash grab? Perhaps, but a select few films have earned the right to come back into theaters, simply because they’ve never left our hearts. Throwing dog tags into the ocean in three…two…one…
SCORE: 5/5 Schmoes (movie)
4/5 Schmoes (IMAX/3D)
