Our review of Mama:

MARK: Horror got off to a, well, horrific start in 2013 with the pitiful cash grab “Texas Chainsaw 3D”…luckily Guillermo del Toro produces a new thriller that will make you forget that stain and remember how much fun it is to get scared at the movies. “Mama” is the story of 2 young girls forced to survive in the wilds of Virginia after a fmily tragedy…when they are finally rescued after 5 years, their adaption back to normal life has a severe roadblock: mama. The apparition that helped raise them has followed them home, and is just a tad possessive. Jessica Chastain stars as the woman saddled with the task of growing up in a hurry as she suddenly must handle this situaition…the performances are fine, the effects believably chilling, and the suspense creeps up in a perfectly paced scarefest that thankfully proves that the horror genre still works (as long as the chainsaws stay put).
